Add tax to a price

Total = price × (1 + rate ÷ 100). $100 at 8.25%: 100 × 1.0825 = $108.25.

Remove tax from a total

Price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100. Tax = total – price. Choose 'tax included' in the Sales Tax Calculator to do this automatically.

Find your rate

US sales tax combines state, county and city rates – from 0% in states like Oregon and Delaware to over 10% in some cities. Check your state revenue department's lookup tool for the exact address.

VAT works the same way

Outside the US, VAT-inclusive prices are common – use the same reverse formula.
