You write a nicely spaced caption and Instagram squashes it into one block. Here’s why, and how to keep your spacing.

Why it happens

Instagram strips empty lines and trailing spaces, especially when a line ends with an emoji or a space.

Keep your spacing

Write the caption with blank lines between paragraphs, paste it into the Instagram Caption Formatter and copy the formatted version. It puts an invisible character on blank lines so Instagram keeps them.

Know the limits

2,200 characters per caption, up to 30 hashtags (3-10 relevant ones usually work better), and up to 20 mentions. Only the first ~125 characters show before 'more', so lead with the hook.

Hashtag tips

Remove duplicates, mix specific and broader tags, and put them at the end or in a first comment for cleaner captions.
