How to Check Who Owns a Domain (and When It Expires)

Want to buy a domain someone else has, check how old a website really is, or make sure your own domain won’t expire? A WHOIS lookup tells you.

Run a lookup

Enter the domain in the WHOIS Lookup. You'll see the registrar, registration date (and age), expiry date, last update, status codes and name servers, straight from the official registry via RDAP.

Why the owner's name is usually hidden

Since GDPR, most registrars redact personal details. To contact the owner, use the registrar's contact form (linked from their WHOIS page) or the email on the website itself.

Check your own domain

If your domain expires, your website and every email address on it stop working – and someone else can register it. Turn on auto-renew, keep the registrar contact email current and check the expiry date once a year.

Domain age and trust

A brand-new domain sending urgent payment requests is a red flag. Scammers often register look-alike domains days before an attack.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a domain that's taken?

Only if the owner sells it – contact them through the registrar or a broker.

What happens when a domain expires?

There's usually a grace period of around 30-45 days before it's released.

Is WHOIS the same as RDAP?

RDAP is the modern, structured replacement for WHOIS.
