The Pomodoro Technique: How 25-Minute Sprints Beat Procrastination

The Pomodoro Technique is the simplest focus system there is: work for 25 minutes, rest for 5, repeat. Here’s how to make it work for you.

How it works

1) Pick one task. 2) Set a timer for 25 minutes and work only on that task. 3) Take a 5-minute break. 4) After four rounds, take a longer 15-30 minute break.

Why it helps

A short, fixed sprint makes starting easier – you only commit to 25 minutes. Regular breaks reduce fatigue, and counting completed rounds shows how long tasks really take.

Adjust it to your work

Deep work like coding or writing often suits 50/10. Admin and email suit 15/3. The Online Timer's Pomodoro mode lets you set your own focus and break lengths and beeps at each switch.

Common mistakes

Checking messages during breaks (it becomes work), skipping breaks when on a roll (you burn out later), and switching tasks mid-round.

Frequently asked questions

Why 25 minutes?

It's the original suggestion by Francesco Cirillo – long enough to get going, short enough to start easily.

What if I'm interrupted?

Note it down and return to it after the round, or restart the round.

Does the timer work in the background?

Yes, as long as the tab stays open.
