Core conventions

Uppercase keywords (SELECT, FROM, WHERE), one main clause per line, list selected columns on separate lines, and indent conditions under WHERE and ON.

Joins and aliases

Use short, meaningful aliases (u for users, o for orders), always state the join type explicitly, and keep each ON condition on its own line.

Format automatically

Paste a query into the SQL Formatter, pick the dialect (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, SQLite, BigQuery) and keyword case, and click Format. It only reformats text – nothing is run against a database.

In code reviews

Agree on one style for your team and format before committing, so diffs show real changes instead of whitespace.

Frequently asked questions

Does formatting change performance?
