Why Are My Photos Sideways After Uploading? (And How to Fix It)

The photo looks fine on your phone, then appears sideways on a website or in an email. The culprit is a hidden setting inside the file.

Why it happens

Phones often save the image pixels in the camera sensor's orientation and add an EXIF 'orientation' tag telling apps how to rotate it. Apps that ignore that tag show the photo sideways.

Fix it permanently

Open Rotate & Flip Image, rotate until it looks right and download. The rotation is baked into the pixels, so it displays correctly everywhere.

Fix several at once

Running photos through the Image Compressor or Remove EXIF Data also re-saves them upright, because the browser applies the orientation before saving.

Mirrored selfies

Front cameras often save a mirrored image. Use Flip horizontal to un-mirror text and logos.
