How to Convert Text to Binary (and Read Binary Messages)

Computers store every letter as a number, and every number as binary. Converting text to binary just writes those numbers out in ones and zeros.

How it works

Each character has a code: in ASCII, 'H' is 72 and 'i' is 105. In binary (8 bits per byte), 72 = 01001000 and 105 = 01101001, so 'Hi' = 01001000 01101001.

Beyond English

Accented letters and emojis use UTF-8, which needs 2-4 bytes per character. 'é' is 11000011 10101001.

Convert either way

Type text in the Text to Binary Converter to see binary (or hex, decimal, octal), or paste binary to decode it back to text.

Fun uses

Puzzles, geocaching clues, coding lessons and 'secret' messages – just remember binary isn't encryption.

Frequently asked questions

Why 8 digits per letter?

One byte is 8 bits, enough for 256 values.

Can I paste binary without spaces?

Yes, if the length is a multiple of 8.

What is hex?

Base 16 – each byte is two characters, like 48 for 'H'.
