How to Reduce Photo Size to 100 KB (or 50 KB) for Online Forms

Visa, passport, exam and job portals often reject photos over 100 KB, 50 KB or even 20 KB. Here’s the fastest way to hit the limit while keeping the photo sharp enough to be accepted.

The quick way (any phone or computer)

Open the Compress Image to 100 KB tool, drop your photo in and download the result. It automatically finds the highest quality that fits under the limit, and only shrinks the dimensions if it has to.

Need a different limit? The Compress Image to Exact Size tool lets you pick 20 KB, 50 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB.

Crop first for a sharper result

Forms usually want your face or signature, not the whole room. Crop tightly to just the head and shoulders (or the signature) before compressing – fewer pixels means more quality per kilobyte.

For passport-style photos, a square 600 × 600 crop is usually plenty.

Check the other requirements

Many portals also specify the format (JPG/JPEG), pixel dimensions (for example 200 × 230), background colour and maximum age of the photo. Read the instructions on the form – file size is only one of the checks.

If dimensions are specified, resize to the exact pixels with the Image Resizer first, then compress.

Why your upload is still rejected

The file might be PNG or HEIC when the site wants JPG – convert it first. Some portals also reject photos with EXIF rotation; re-saving through the compressor fixes this because it writes a clean JPG.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a photo exactly 100 KB?

You don't need exactly 100 KB – just under it. The tool targets the limit and stays below it.

Will compressing to 50 KB make my photo blurry?

Crop tightly first and it will usually look fine. 20 KB is where quality starts to drop for larger photos.

Do I need to install an app?

No, it works in your phone or computer browser.
