How to Create and Submit a Sitemap to Google

A sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to find. Submitting it helps new and updated pages get discovered faster.

Find your sitemap

WordPress: /wp-sitemap.xml (or /sitemap_index.xml with Yoast or Rank Math). Shopify, Wix and Squarespace: /sitemap.xml. The Robots.txt & Sitemap Checker finds it automatically and counts the URLs.

Check robots.txt first

A leftover 'Disallow: /' blocks Google from your whole site – the checker flags it. Add a line 'Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml' to robots.txt.

Submit in Search Console

In Google Search Console, verify your domain, open Sitemaps in the left menu, enter the sitemap URL and press Submit. Check back after a few days for 'Success' and the number of discovered pages.

Also tell Bing

Bing Webmaster Tools can import your Search Console sites in one click. Bing also powers Copilot and DuckDuckGo results.

Frequently asked questions

Does a sitemap guarantee indexing?

No – it helps discovery; Google still decides what to index.

How often should I resubmit?

Once is enough; Google re-reads it automatically.

Should every page be in it?

Only pages you want in search – not admin, thank-you or duplicate pages.
