The 2,080 rule

40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. Salary divided by 2,080 gives the hourly rate; hourly times 2,080 gives the salary. $52,000 a year is $25 an hour.

Other periods

Monthly is the annual figure divided by 12, not weekly times four – a month averages 4.33 weeks. Biweekly pay is the annual figure divided by 26.

Adjust for your reality

Part-time? Change the hours per week. Unpaid holidays? Reduce the weeks worked. The Salary to Hourly Calculator lets you set both.

Freelancers

A freelance rate must also cover tax, insurance, equipment and unbilled time. A common rule of thumb is 1.5 to 2 times the equivalent employee hourly rate.
