Quick test

Open the Webcam & Mic Test, click Start and allow access. You'll see your video with resolution and frame rate, and a live level meter that moves when you speak. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Camera shows black or nothing

Close other apps using the camera (Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS), check for a physical privacy shutter, and allow camera access in the browser's address bar. On Windows: Settings > Privacy & security > Camera; on Mac: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.

Microphone not working

Pick the right input device in your system sound settings (headsets and webcams add their own mics), check it isn't muted, and allow microphone access for the browser.

Look and sound better

Face a window or lamp, raise the camera to eye level, and use earphones with a mic to avoid echo.
