JPG (JPEG)

Best for photos you share, email or upload. Small files, opens everywhere. Lossy – quality drops a little every time it's re-saved – and no transparency.

PNG

Best for screenshots, logos, text and anything with transparency. Lossless and sharp, but photos as PNG are 5-10x bigger than JPG.

WebP

Best for websites. Usually 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same quality, supports transparency, and every modern browser supports it. Some older apps and upload forms still don't accept it.

HEIC

The iPhone camera default. Excellent quality at small size, but Windows, many Android apps and websites can't open it – convert to JPG for sharing.
