Length beats complexity

"P@ssw0rd!" looks complex but is cracked instantly because attackers try common substitutions first. A random 16-character password, or four or five random words, takes centuries to crack.

Test any password with the Password Strength Checker to see its estimated crack time.

Passphrases for the passwords you must remember

For your computer login, phone and password manager, use 4-6 random words like river-candle-orbit-maple. The Password Generator's passphrase mode picks the words randomly – humans are bad at choosing truly random words.

Unique passwords for everything else

Let a password manager generate and remember a different password for every site. Then a breach at one site can't unlock the others.

Add two-factor authentication

Even the best password can be phished. Turn on 2FA (authenticator app or passkeys) for email, banking and work accounts.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a password be?

At least 14-16 characters for important accounts.

Are passphrases secure?

Yes, if the words are chosen randomly – 5 random words is very strong.

Should I change passwords regularly?

Only when there's a reason (a breach or suspicion). Forced frequent changes lead to weaker passwords.
