How to Open HEIC Files on Windows (3 Easy Ways)

iPhones save photos in HEIC format to save space, but Windows often shows “file not supported” or a blank thumbnail. Here are three free ways to fix it – the first takes about ten seconds.

1. Convert HEIC to JPG in your browser (fastest)

Open the free HEIC to JPG converter, drop your photos in and download them as JPG. The conversion happens on your own computer, so your photos are never uploaded.

JPG opens in every Windows app, website upload form and email, which makes this the best option when you need to send or upload the photos.

2. Install the HEIF Image Extensions from Microsoft

Open the Microsoft Store, search for "HEIF Image Extensions" and install it. Some PCs also need "HEVC Video Extensions" (which may cost a small fee).

After installing, the Photos app can open HEIC files – but many other programs and websites still can't, so you may still need to convert them.

3. Stop your iPhone saving HEIC

On your iPhone open Settings > Camera > Formats and choose "Most Compatible". New photos will be saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC.

Alternatively, in Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC, choose "Automatic" so iOS converts photos to JPG when you copy them over a cable.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't Windows open HEIC files?

HEIC uses the HEVC codec, which Windows does not include by default for licensing reasons.

Is converting HEIC to JPG safe?

Yes, with a converter that works in your browser your photos never leave your computer.

Does HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

At 90%+ JPG quality the difference is not visible. JPG files are a bit larger than HEIC.
